VG Round-Up: Fat Cat Wins, Catherine Is Weird, and NES Anniversary

A triple dose of news and random findings tonight.

Earlier today, Kotaku posted a cute but half-boring little parody video of Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat. Cat lovers, such as I, will enjoy it because the fat cat wins, but how the fat cat wins is sure to crack a smile.

Over the last month or two, Atlus fans might have stumbled across a weird new game called Catherine. Developed by the company’s Persona team, the nightmarish action-adventure title promises a trippy visual experience, at the least. It’s so bizarre, I can’t help but want to snatch a copy this winter (for PS3 and Xbox 360).

The video below provides a Japanese-English translation, though guesses as to its accuracy are up for grabs. The trailer and game are adult in theme, so watch (and play) with the door closed.

Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the NES. What oldies are your favorites? 8 Eyes, Snake Rattle ‘N Roll, Final Fantasy, Zelda II, StarTropics, and Super Mario Bros. 3 make my short but sweet list.

Sounds of Nostalgia: StarTropics

Sounds of Nostalgia

Do we need an excuse to play old games? Hell no! But sometimes music from OSTs can inspire us to try new ones or revisit past loves like dirty, secret affairs.

Take a chubby boy named Mike, have aliens kidnap his uncle, stick him on an island with a yo-yo, and mix in a little tribal witch-doctoring and you’ve got StarTropics for the NES. With one of the most whacked out premises, StarTropics took the concept and made it as successful as it was memorable. Plus, Mike can travel from place to place in a submarine operated by a robot named NAV-COM. That’s, like, every kid’s dream. Or it should be.

From a weaponized yo-yo to ray guns, bosses like Octo the Huge and a giant C-Serpent that shoots fire from its mouth, StarTropics graced the console with its bold, fun adventure. Let’s go help some dolphins.

Retro Review: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Yesterday my first entry in the Goozex Retro Reviews on-going feature was posted, so be sure to stop by and learn about all my childhood memories of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. See, I promised something more on that game, didn’t I? I’ll be contributing more in time, so hang tight.

Sounds of Nostalgia: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Do we need an excuse to play old games? Hell no! But sometimes music from OSTs can inspire us to try new ones or revisit past loves like dirty, secret affairs.

If I could make my own special soundtrack featuring any video game song, I’d call it “Sounds of Nostalgia” and slap lots of midis from 8-bit games on the playlist, and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link on the NES (now also on the GBA) would definitely make the cut. The theme from Parapa Palace ranks as one of my favorites to this day.
