This weekend’s reviews are for The Unexpected #1, The Shade #1, and My Greatest Adventure #1. Enjoy!
It’s been a busy weekend for me. First, be sure to check out my interview with writer and ex-DC Comics president Paul Levitz on the new Huntress mini. You can find it at Impulse Creations.
Secondly, if you’re a Silent Hill fan, stop by GameZone for my editorial about Konami’s shaky grasp on the series and Vatra Games’ positive direction.
Finally, whether you played Spyro the Dragon on the PlayStation, pocketed him on your GBA or DS, or took to the skies in The Legend of Spyro trilogy, you’ll find something worth reading in my editorial on the history and evolution of Spyro.
Spyro is iconic to different generations of gamers. Love him or loathe him, it’s hard not to admire his everlasting determination to fry the bad guys and keep going no matter what the demographic, design, or gameplay. In an era of blockbuster hit-and-runs, Spyro refuses to hide his horned head in shame and go the way of the bandicoot. As a character that survives the damaging cycle of new developers and new visions, he’s more than worth his weight in gems.
How do you remember the dragon?
Head over to Impulse Creations to read my overview on the new DC 52. Which were your favorites?
What is your favorite new DC book so far? Over at Impulse Creations, I talk about one of the less popular titles to come out: BATWING. Read it here.

I reviewed yesterday’s DC reboot releases on Twitter today. You’ll have to wait till this weekend for my assessment of BATWING #1 (in fuller review form), but here are some quick impressions of this week’s thirteen (minus BATWING). I don’t usually do this sort of thing, but I thought it might be fun to have a record.

ACTION COMICS #1: Whoa. Action Comics #1 was awesome.
ANIMAL MAN #1: Oooh, Animal Man #1 WAS good! Good job, @JeffLemire and Travel Foreman (who isn’t on Twitter – bummer!).
DETECTIVE COMICS #1: WOW. Gordon’s hair is red in Detective Comics #1. I mean flame red.
I love the Joker’s purple umbrella in Detective Comics #1. Details can make a big difference.
Well, Detective Comics #1 was good. I enjoyed it. A lot of good #DC52 picks, actually.
HAWK AND DOVE #1: Reading Hawk and Dove #1. So far, so good. #DC52
Hawk and Dove #1 by @sterlinggates was amazing, start to finish. Definitely one of the best and most effective #DC52 comics so far.
STORMWATCH #1: Heh. Stormwatch #1 was entertaining, all right.
SWAMP THING #1: Swamp Thing #1 is excellent, as well. Amazing work by @Ssnyder1835 and @YanickPaquette.
BATGIRL #1: Batgirl #1 has good intentions, but it has a lot of problems. I’m not so hot on this one, although the coloring is really nice. #DC52
GREEN ARROW #1: The dialogue in Green Arrow #1 feels worn out. This one’s not a winner.
MEN OF WAR #1: Men of War #1 was unimpressive, outdated, and messy. The second story was better, but not by much. #DC52
JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #1: Justice League International #1 is … all right. Not a fan of Guy Gardner but Booster Gold is cool, so it had that going for it. #DC52
OMAC #1: OMAC #1 was silly. In an embarrassing way. The Gobblers were fun, though. #DC52
STATIC SHOCK#1: Positive and negative electric charge puns and Static Shock #1 isn’t off to a good start.
I have to wonder: do people even think about Static Shock anymore? Like, ever? I grew up with it and it wasn’t that great even then.
Not to mention Virgil Hawkins has inadvertently been replaced by Cole MacGrath …
Okay, Static Shock #1 was pretty decent. It certainly felt like Static Shock, that’s for sure.
