I think the latter part of season one hinted at good things, which was why I was excited for S2, but I think the problem is consistency. Usually when Whedon's shows pick up speed---well, they pick up speed. Dollhouse has, in my opinion, been fluctuating in quality too much to make any real impact on people as a whole. Any Whedon fan can figure that out though (as you said). It's kind of sad because this show specifically would have gotten much better as time dragged on. I suppose what's really sad is that Dollhouse won't be remembered well either. It was easy to get behind Firefly because as basic science fiction, it hit the ground running and just kept getting better.
