Dollhouse Faces the Attic (Again)

Dollhouse will most likely be turning off its lights and shutting its doors due to its so far poorly received second season. After a short first season that lazily drew in fans and numbers, Fox showed Joss Whedon’s latest creation a little mercy by allowing it another chance to nail ‘em.
Any Whedon fan knows that his shows take a bit of time to strengthen, but the result is always well worth it. Fox hasn’t exactly treated Whedon with the same faith before; in fact, the ever-popular cult show Firefly met its death in its first season mostly due to Fox’s own errors (aka, mixing up the episodes, because that makes sense). Firefly may be the reason why Fox granted Whedon some leniency with Dollhouse, but the show continues to falter. Now, there’s a good chance it’s getting the axe according to sources like Hollywood Reporter.
What do you think? Are you a member of the unimpressed crowd, or do you believe all Whedon needs is a bit more time to develop plot and characters? Will you be disappointed to see Fox switch off Dollhouse and put the actives to rest? I’m not completely behind star actress Eliza Dushku, but I admit I was falling for the show and its many characters later into its prior season. This time around, though, it hasn’t been winning me over, but perhaps the concept could benefit from another Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel treatment—turning it over to Dark Horse, ideally, or IDW Publishing for reincarnation. Buffy especially has found tremendous success in the medium.
At the least, Whedon will have more time to work on his sequel to the musical web short, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.”

I’m kinda sad I didn’t watch this. But I did watch that show where she was able to go back in time and try to save the people.

From what I heard, the last few episodes showed the series had the ability to catch up with its ambition. Any Whedon fan can figure that out though (as you said). It’s kind of sad because this show specifically would have gotten much better as time dragged on.
I suppose what’s really sad is that Dollhouse won’t be remembered well either. It was easy to get behind Firefly because as basic science fiction, it hit the ground running and just kept getting better. Dollhouse was just starting to find its place amongst an audience that wasn’t entirely on board with the concept to begin with.

Dollhouse has been officially canceled by Fox, but it will be allowed to finish out production and airing of it’s 13 episode order

After a largely disappointing 1st season, even my patience was thinning, but I have enjoyed some of the more recent episodes, too little too late.
I have high hopes for the Dr. Horrible sequel, it’s hammer time.

Thanks for the update, Matt! At least we’ll get to finish out the season, however flimsy it may be.
I agree, SLS. I think the latter part of season one hinted at good things, which was why I was excited for S2, but I think the problem is consistency. Usually when Whedon’s shows pick up speed—well, they pick up speed. Dollhouse has, in my opinion, been fluctuating in quality too much to make any real impact on people as a whole. So you might very well be right about it not being remembered.

I don’t know why Wheadon would even want to work with the Fox network after Firefly. Dollhouse had so much potential and watching the show develop over several seasons would have been very fun. Anyone else predict we’ll get a Dollhouse comic from Wheadon and friends someday?

I believe he’s stuck under a contract with them. Otherwise, yeah, I’m sure he would have run far away by now.
