UPDATE: Pottermore is an online reading experience open to everyone starting in October. In her official video announcement, Rowling announced that the community of Pottermore will allow readers to rediscover the Harry Potter books in a new, interactive way. Audio and ebook copies of the series will be available for the first time, and Rowling will share secret knowledge of the books, as well.

You know how owls are. They’re lousy messengers; half the time they smack right into glass windows, or drop the mail (or something else). According to Rebecca Salt, a spokeswoman for Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, the British press aren’t too bright, either.

“The British press have been very imaginative in their interpretation of the document, but I can categorically say the project is not a Treasure Hunt or a game,” Salt told the LA Times Technology blog.

The statement was made in response to supposed leaked details that Pottermore, a website of uncertain purpose that goes live tomorrow, is a video game with real-life prizes, such as special wands hidden across the UK and possibly other countries.  Some sources reported that the online portion of the game would mimic World of Warcraft, a popular MMO.

Salt is saying no: it’s not any of those. She could be covering up what’s already been revealed by press, but considering all will be revealed on the special YouTube channel tomorrow, I doubt she’d tell a last-minute lie for PR’s sake.

Do we really need another Harry Potter video game, anyway? Is that worth a special announcement? And a scavenger hunt? It could be viral advertising for the movie, but this is called Pottermore. JK Rowling is giving us more of something, and why would she personally bother with promoting the last film when she has able professionals who can do that for her?

Of course, it could be a farewell—a thank you to the creative talent who made the movies and the devoted fans who saw them.

Or it could be an announcement of another small, Potter-related book like The Tales of Beedle the Bard, whose profits went to charity.

We’ll find out soon enough. The clock is currently ticking in at 8 hours.
